I can't help it, even if this is old.. A few pages back their's some arguments about unix being an environment. It's not, unix kernel = the operating system, /bin/bash, /bin/ash, or whatever shell you are using sets the environment (variables, unstated defaults, whatever) and cooperates with the kernel.

I mean, Jeez. I haven't touched a any *nix box since I ran 36Chambers.org nearly 10 years ago, but at least I know that much.
