[EDIT] ok umm.. foudn this on the maya program

What is the relationship between the six-month Digital Character Animation (Maya) program and the one-year 3D Animation & Visual Effects (3D) production program?
We have half the time to create great work!!! Maya is a six- versus 12-month program.
The focus of the Digital Character Animation (Maya) program is on character animation. Within the one-year 3D animation & visual effects production program, students spend more time on learning about the fundamentals related to the wider ranger of options within 3D animation and then have the option to pursue one of three streams (modeling, animation or visual effects). Digital Character Animation (Maya) students are expected to be animators at the end of the program, after all this is what the name implies.
There is not a lot of cross-pollination between the Maya and 3D programs simply because we are separated by software issues. We use Maya obviously and in the 3D program they use XSI software. Only when a 3D one-year student decides to follow the VFX (visual effects) stream does he/she switch over to Maya.
Because the course lasts an intensive six months, students are expected to learn Maya as well as create a short film in a very short time. Maya is the most complicated 3D software package on the planet and there is a lot of pressure for students to practice and succeed. This is similar to a typical industry (job) situation where animators will sometimes get as little as three weeks to learn a software package and are then expected to create a commercial in four to five months. Pretty extreme, but this is the reality of the industry. I bring a lot of industry mentors into the program to share their own unique vantage points and help students. Students get a lot from making these industry connections and it helps having a different set of eyes look at their work.
Who should invest in an education in Digital Character Animation (Maya) program?
Anyone with aspirations to add another storytelling method to their arsenal—some classical 2D training or drawing/art experience is imperative.
Classical 2D animation is evolving into a CG (computer graphic)/2D hybrid. Learning Maya definitely gives you a leg-up in the industry. No one is really sure where it is going, but it is good to be prepared.
Why learn Maya and not another software package?
I really don’t care what software package a student learns. You will find that some software works better in some respects than others. Ideally, you should know several packages just to stay vital in this industry, but you need to learn one well before you can effectively go about learning the others.
I use Maya because I find it offers the most unified solution to typical 3D animation challenges and is continually updating itself with new and innovative tools. Other software seems stale and unstable in comparison. Maya is built on a solid core of functionality and it does the job. If something else comes along, well I will have to cross that bridge when it comes.
Describe the learning environment and experience a student of the Maya program can expect.
Intensity. Without fail students still feel that because the program is computer-based, it removes the workload. If anything, it increases it.
As a classical artist/animator, you can fix things with a pencil and eraser. In 3D, if you do not follow particular workflows you will run into problems. It is the perfect unification of left and right brain thinking. You need to be able to switch back and forth pretty quickly.
First and foremost, pre-production reviews start 3-4 weeks into the class. You are expected to work on these conceptual stages outside of class time because during class time you are busy learning how to use Maya. After two months (one term), you are expected to have several models completed and textured, a set built and one lit, two character animation assignments finished and have just the polish left to put onto the pre-production bundle.
By the end of the following term, you are required to have all elements modeled, textured and rigged, ready to go for your Term 3 production. This is in addition to classes in compositing, cinematography and several character animation assignments.
I tell most students to kiss their loved ones goodbye and tell them they will see them in six months. Term 3 is where students prove that they can use the skills instilled in them. There are no formal lectures and no new information is doled out. At this point instructors work side by side with students as mentors and support staff for any issues that arise.
What is your role as senior instructor?
I take responsibility for the day-to-day course delivery, the development of new course material and management of the program’s instructional staff. I also do the research regarding new techniques and developments in the industry, and beta test new versions of Maya in order to introduce them to students.
I also act as a voice for the school and Maya in other instructional arenas; I am a technical editor at New Riders publications and work with several other publishers to review proposals for books. I am currently writing a series of books on Maya and am hoping to have them published later this year.
Finally, I also act as an advisor for students with personal problems during the course. It is important that students feel they can approach me at any time should they encounter challenges.
Do you have any words of advice for students considering a career in Digital Character Animation (Maya)?
This industry can throw a lot of ego at you. And the slinging gets worse the better you get. Persistence will see you through. I would also say to be a realist coming into it. You will not be able to take six months of training and walk into ILM. Companies will look at what you did last week, and then judge you on what you are doing this week.
