Dumbshit. Do you not see the upload? 3mbps? Big fucking whoop. I'm talking about both up and down here. With DSL, theoretically any speed is possible since it's based on your distance from the provider. If you're right next door I wouldn't doubt speeds of 50mbps+, but you're still fucking capped in upload which is the god damn point.

So what does it matter? By the way dumbshit, I was talking about a home based connection. Optical and the such is business class. Learn to read. Broadband itself (cable/dsl) have their limits based off what the ISP thinks is best. Generally cable/dsl doesn't go above 10mbps except in certain countries that like to break the mold and get 25mbps like some European countries. You won't find any USA ISPs offering 25mbps at cheap rates to home users.

You could go and say OC192 is above it all and available. Why not. It's still optical, but it's not HOME BASED. It's BUSINESS BASED.

Also, you don't share cable or dsl either. <- don't even get me started on that. You don't share cable esp. as much as people want to argue it. If you're going to comment on that, go research first.

One more thing. I'm hooked up to my hub at 100mbps but does that mean my internet is 100mbps? NO. My internet is 8mbps/1mbps give or take a few kbps. Before you go spouting shit you have no clue about, go do some research. While you're at it, learn how to work with ips because obviously you have no idea how they function.

internal = lan
external = wan
no router = no internal
direct connection to internet = no router = no internal = single ip (unless you want to get into multicasting and multicards)

COMPUTER -- ROUTER -- MODEM -- INTERNET
INTERNAL IP -- EXTERNAL IP

WITH A ROUTER: Your computer has the internal ip RELATIVE TO THE ROUTER. And the router has the EXTERNAL IP.

If there is no router as you claim then THERE IS NO INTERNAL IP. There is only your WAN IP. STICK YOUR WAN IP IN THE ADDRESS PLACES.

Caps lock for parts YOU SHOULD READ. Got it? Good. No router + your computer intelligence = 1 ip. You couldn't possible configure anything to have more than one ip so you should have only one. If you SOMEHOW have more than one ip, go fuck yourself and stop trying to make a server. If you only have one ip, then this is all the info you should ever need.

I still can't believe you're asking for help on how to set it up.

Your friend is running the server?
Your friend is directly connected.
Your friend has broadband.

"Your friend" can be interchanged with "You" if it's wrong.

Sharing internet is SHARING INTERNET. It has NOTHING to do with how many locations it bounces from to reach the destination.

The myth about cable sharing is if a lot of people started using the internet in your neighborhood you'd start going slower. True and false.

False because you're not sharing bandwidth. It Betty Sue next door is maxing out her connection, it won't make you go any slower.
True because it's true with any service IN THE WORLD. If load goes up, so do latencies. The ISP is just a giant pipe. If you put too much flow through it, it creates delays. Same with plumbing. Same with DSL. DSL was claimed to be the better service due to "not sharing" but really they only stretched the truth. Cable shares, but not like it was made to look like. DSL can lag too if the entire neighborhood starts using it at once.

About LAN's, you apparently know nothing of them. I used to have a more thorough LAN here, but since my ISP fixed my ip issue I don't have to use NAT anymore so it's back to all direct connections.

Used to have this computer supply the house with internet while my win2k3 server handled everything.
