What are your stances on opensource? I wanna develop this game and have something like the old hbx going but open source where people can download stuff (sources) and run their own server. the main goal would be developemnt. new stuff, custom code, custom tools. I'm in the mood to code again.

What being open source? More HB files or a hypothetical game?

HB files. immagine a customizable hb where ppl can search for repo's of source code. SVN repo's. network protocol documentation. new sprites. modular code. the point being its centralized opensource and ppl are free to make their own custom servers whichever way the want. plus everything will be nicely documented and it would be a community project to keep hb alive. community working in its free time to keep an old game active.

5-6 coders
2 gfx artists
1 document writter
1 project moderator/planner to keep the whole thing intact.

and people are free to submit their own code. if its what the community wants (voted on) it will be introduced to the main branch.

Firstly it should be closed source to manage what is done and what firstly need to be done then release it...

How about starting new game based on hb engine ?

might as well code a new engine no ?

to me it should be opensource, open to scrutiny and open to use by the public. so one day if it should all die. some1 else can pick up and go forward!

I don't think it should be open source. The HB community is full of retards who don't know how to do this kind of thing. I know you'll come back and say "it will get more people into it" but that was already proven wrong when Daryl released the client sources right? Given 2-3 people worked on it, that was all. No one else really did jack shit with it. "open source ftw" my ass. All it did was help fucktards like NOL develop hack clients and make their servers unhackable while they do shit to others. Opensource within the proper community is good, but HB is not that community.

im gonna side with KLKS on this one.. open source is the nicest way to guarantee a continued community..

i think however what you are all trying to say is that there should be original master copies that are un-edited yes?
but tbh that should be standard practice with open source.. NEVER EVER EVER remove old versions, so if 1 gets fubar'd you can go back a version or 2, that has kind of happened with what we have got but there are a lot of steps missing..

i like the idea KLKS, as long as, as you say, everything is documented and there are original copies of everything but i think the more freedom everyone has to edit/add/modify the game will create more diversity among the servers.

i mean all servers are almost the same atm exept the odd feature thats diff, and ofc items that are the same but different stats, its boring and stagnated, and i dont know about you lot but helbreath seems to be going nowhere fast atm.

why are we all so fixated on leaving in what the crazy folks at stech buggered up..

open source all the way i say..
(but with backups) hehe. just my 2c

oh P.S the biggest difference you can make is to allow anyone with any knowledge to modify the .pak's
scrap the .pak idea and extract them all to jpg or something.. bmp even.. anything so that they can be freely edited and will still load, was talkin to bone-you about this the other day.
some people are so good at graphics but with the stupid pak's in the format they are.. your so limited to what you can do!

personally iv wanted to add guild emblems to cloaks for AGES, but the .paks are just so limited, and i dont know anything about them /cry

we can disable all bugs by recoding server & client.

The sprite editors we have already bring it back to this level. Pak is a sprite format. Even if the format is scrapped then you still need to load an actual sprite for the now increased amount of files. Not to mention the fact every client's sprites must be downloaded and reinstalled with the new format. And in the end your new format will essentialy be an unorganized .pak file.

ya extracting them wouldnt be the best plan, cant the limits be removed? filesize etc? cant do squat with them as they are, and its gonna be so hard to add totally new stuff and enhance stuff if they are as limited as they are now :/

*edit srry im going off topic, ill shut up now :P

What limits? Don't know what you're talking about. They aren't all that limited. If you look at some of the paks, they have around 600 sprites and each sprite with like 20 frames. I'd say that's a lot for a single pak.

SVN would be the easiest way to go about it. I'm all for opensource projects, but as bone-you said, they work really well in the normal community. But people in the Helbreath community are just too fucking retarded.

I think closed source SVN project that can take input from those in the community, and then release the source at a later stage.

i still say we allow people to get the sources. so lets start somewhere. we need a todo list for starters and some1 to host SVN plus we need a base to start on. It may take another year or so but by then we should have nice stable servers ppl can play on. new features and we can code it any god damn way we want. it dosent have to ve 100% simentec!.
